Dehydration and waterborne dysentery kill more human beings in the aftermath of infrastructure collapse than violence and starvation combined. When municipal water treatment plants lose grid power, backflow preventers fail and raw sewage siphons into depressurized mains within hours.
Why Single-Stage Filtering Fails
Many preppers buy a single plastic straw filter and check the 'Water' box off their list. Then they attempt to filter muddy, virus-laden floodwater or agricultural runoff. Within 3 liters, clay silt clogs the hollow-fiber pores completely; worse, 0.02-micron enteric viruses pass straight through a 0.1-micron pore, and dissolved herbicides remain untouched without activated carbon adsorption.
The Dry Chlorine Stockpile Equation
Stop stockpiling jugs of liquid bleach that expire in a year. Stockpile dry Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) tablets or pure Calcium Hypochlorite granules (minimum 68% available chlorine, zero algicides or clarifiers). To make a master stock chlorine solution from Calcium Hypochlorite: dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (approx. 1/4 ounce) of granules into 2 gallons (8 liters) of water inside a non-metallic container. Then use 1 part of this master stock solution to disinfect 100 parts of clear filtered drinking water (roughly 1.5 ounces of stock per gallon of water), agitate, and wait 30 minutes before consumption.
