Grid-Down Water & Fuel Calculator

How much water and propane does your household need to ride out an outage?

Your Household
Heating (Northeast winter)

Your Plan

Water for people
Water for pets
Total stored water
With safety margin (x1.5)
Heat load of your space
Total heat energy for the outage
Propane needed
In full 20 lb cylinders
In exchange tanks (about 15 lb fill)

Rates used: water 1.0 gal/person/day (FEMA/CDC), 0.50 gal/day per medium/large dog, 0.15 gal/day per cat. Heat load: square feet x 40-45 BTU/hr (Northeast climate zones 5/6). Propane: 21,500 BTU per lb. Real-world heater runtime is shorter than the math suggests - plan with margin. One tank warning: swap/exchange cylinders are commonly filled to about 15 lb rather than a full 20 lb, so count those at the exchange-tank figure - counting them as full 20s overestimates your fuel by about a third.
